Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new cabinet has several first-time ministers, who were sworn into office alongwith him in a grand oath ceremony in Delhi today. The most prominent first timer in PM Modi’s cabinet is BJP president Amit Shah. Last evening, he had made calls to leaders who will be ministers in the new government. On the other hand, veteran leader Sushma Swaraj sat out of a BJP government for the first time. PM Modi, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari and Amit Shah among others have taken oath at a grand ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Amethi MP Smriti Irani was among the six women ministers to take oath in the newly-formed government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.
The number of women ministers in this government is lower than the last time, even though the number of women elected in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls is the highest ever (since 1952).
With over 14 per cent female members, the 17th Lok Sabha has 78 women, highest since 1952. The 16th Lok Sabha had 64 women, while 52 were elected to the 15th Lok Sabha.
